1.  Independent Reading -- We will read for about ten minutes.

NOTE:Just reminding you about this again!

Hello 10^th grade English Teachers

 The district is having all 10^th grade students participate in the Junior Achievement Program. Point Loma High School will visit the JA site from October 5 – 12. There are prep classes for students beforehand and we need to coordinate.

2. Wall Street Journal --  Read the paper each day.  Article summaries will be turned in each Friday.  You have already satisfied the assignment for this week. I will pass out new sheets on Monday.

3.  "The Interlopers" -- You finished reading and annotating this story for homework.  You also completed the handout recording and interpreting details of setting. We will discuss these details and complete another handout which further enhances our understanding and appreciation of this story.

3.  "The Interlopers" -- You will be reading this story with a partner.  Just as you have done with reading "The Sniper," you will pause after each paragraph and respond to the reading.  Your responses will be recorded on your copy of the story next to the paragraph.  In other words, you are annotating as you read.  Underline words and sentences and make notes.  Annotate especially for the significance of descriptive details concerning setting.

Homework:  1.  Finish reading "The Interlopers," annotating as you go along.  Complete the handout, noting 10 details with an explanation.  2. Independent reading

I am modifying the article assignment to one news article summary a week.  If there is strong objection to this, we will continue as we have been.  You will receive a paper each day to take home.  Personally, I have really been enjoying increasing my knowledge of current events!

     Group 1: Joyful/optimistic
     Group 2: Dark/pessimistic

1.  Independent Reading -- Today we will begin independent reading.  We will read for about ten minutes.

3.  "The Sniper" -- I will collect both papers on the story.  You should have written a summary of the story on the back of the handout you received yesterday.

4.  In the next story we will examine how setting contributes to the theme of a story.  Before we begin with the story "The Interlopers," I would like you to write a description of a setting according to the tone that you want to convey.  I will divide you into two groups. Group 1 will describe a setting that conveys optimism, joy, love, peacefulness, etc.  Group 2 will describe a setting that describes the opposite  -- danger, fear, anxiety, sadness, pessimism, etc.  To provide some structure or framework here, the scene is at the beach.

3.  "The Sniper"  -- We will finish discussing your responses to the story, and I will collect your handout.  There is another assignment on "The Sniper" which is reviewing the elements of narrative in this story.  Work with your partner to successfully complete the handout.
